When allergy consultant Dr Bruce Mitchell, Director of the Immunology Laboratory Blackrock Clinic, Dublin, discussed with his patients potential life threatening emergency situations, they revealed that their biggest concern was an attack when on their own and away from home and family - would there be someone to help me call the emergency services to explain the problem and location - whilst struggling to breathe?

Dr Mitchell had read about a specialist UK based company with tracking and location technology - 3Arc, who were already working with regional police forces. 3Arc already operated an 'angel service' as well as vehicle tracking devices that provide location data to a computer management system.

Through its relationship with a major NHS call centre, 3Arc has developed a unique database so that the callers profile and exact location can be identified and available on screen at the emergency centre.

This forms the basis of Breathe999, and the smart phone app. The resulting data helps to shorten information collection so providing a faster and 100% accurate dispatch of emergency help.

The registration process involves a specially formulated questionnaire prepared by Dr Mitchell to provide the best possible clinical data for the emergency services and will be supplemented with the location data retrieved from your smart phone when used in the emergency. The service is totally confidential and being comprehensively trialled at the moment.

The service is available for a subscription fee, and will be launched in the UK shortly.
